Back Off Man, I'm On A Radioactive High!
Recent Entries
Spent a couple of hours at the first EscapistExpo this afternoon, primarily to play original, classic arcade machine games. There was all this other stuff going on that I tend to "meh" about but hey, they had Donkey Kong! Mario Brothers! Centipede! And a busted Gyrus, :(

And then it turns out there's this MagFest thingee going on near DC in early January. And people I know are actually going, including most of the wife's D&D group. And there's even a fountaingirl around the area though no idea what her gang will be doing around that time.

Then two weeks later we are contemplating taking the spawn to Disney World for the first time ever.

And NC ComiCon is in November - About a week before Thanksgiving, for which we are contemplating flying to Texas for.

Which is all pretty doable except I have to remind myself I have this whole classes thing going on this semester. Also, money.
24th-Dec-2011 10:50 am - Merry Christmas, ya bastards
Yeah I've been reaaaaaaaaaly lax about updating LJ lately, to the point of kind of forgetting it exists. Every now and then I get an e-mail about new LiveJournal features and I'm like all "Oh yeah! I have an account there!".

So I'll try and do a tad better with it. I may also end-up auto-feeding my twitter updates to my LJ account. If I do it would be under a specific friend grouping so as not to bombard everyone.

Meanwhile, Merry Christmas, Happy Chaunka, Happy New Years and all that!
4th-Jul-2010 10:00 am - Independence Day
Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Make sure to celebrate it by firing your representatives in congress!
17th-Nov-2009 11:24 pm - Moblin
So recently my old Dell Latitude died. Which was bad, as it was my internal DNS and SMTP server.

I picked-up an Acer Aspire One netbook to replace it. And of course I proceeded to nuke WinXP and install a Linux distro. I put Moblin on it and so far, I've really liked the overall interface design.

But it's still kinda unstable. Lots of app errors, kernel errors and other weirdness. I've had to reboot it a lot. Even though Moblin 2.1 is supposed to be "stable" it's much more like an early beta, sadly. And there's some weird things not available for the distro. Like you can install bind but not sendmail. And there's no telnet client.

Still, it's a start. All i need to do now is hack it so the system doesn't go to suspend when the lid is closed and it can at least replace DNS again...
10th-Nov-2009 07:23 pm - London Broil
Honestly, is there any better way to eat beef than London Broil?

No. There's not.
5th-Aug-2009 10:28 am - Oh, add to that list...
The search term "classic".

Yes, just the word "classic" is enough to make Google image search cough-up topless women as it's second image result.

The first result being a picture of two iPods.

  • Dull candy
  • Party candy
  • Mundane versus excitement
Seriously? You need to go to therapy, Internet!
4th-Aug-2009 06:11 pm - WAUGH!

22nd-Jul-2009 10:38 pm - Not sure which is more work...
Packing or unpacking? Hmmm....
16th-Jul-2009 09:30 pm - Business as Usual
Apparently, Obama doesn't want to overturn all of Bush's old policies.

You know, of all the things I figured Obama was going to do, it seemed a good chance he'd halt the spying programs Bush had in place. But not only has he done absolutely nothing to stop them, he's now building them up, defending them and possibly using them to spy on Americans.

I suspect he's doing this in part because he's been given all sorts of scary evidence of evil terrorists and their plans to destroy America. Which of course is coming from the same organizations doing the spying, which have a vested interest in continuing the programs because it makes their jobs easier.
2nd-Jul-2009 04:22 pm - Well, that's rude. :(
Just got my first "Copyright Infringement" notice from Youtube, for a video I uploaded months ago. And had maybe a few dozen hits on it....

It was a 1.5 minute extract from an episode of Metalocalypse. And I certainly wasn't profiting from it in any way. Yet Cartoon Network still issued a take-down notice and of course Youtube doesn't check these things out. And there's no way to respond to them, or the asshat lawyer. I can file an appeal, which has to be done through a paper process. And you basically get your ass hauled into court if you do that.

I'm pretty sure what happened was Cartoon Network wants to "clean-up" videos of the Metalocalypse show for the upcoming CD release and new season of shows. But what makes it utterly, completely pointless is Adult Swim puts ALL of the episodes on-line for free!

28th-Jun-2009 11:53 pm - Neda
And now for more uncomfortable truths.

It is unlikely Neda would've become a martyr if she wasn't attractive looking.

People are always more upset about the death of the attractive and well-placed in society, versus the death of the common, the homeless, the ugly...

I'm sorry that I don't get worked up about Iran. I can't, really. More people died because of a random earthquake on Christmas in 2004.
25th-Jun-2009 09:59 pm - Pathetic
Amazon slaps up a "Michael Jackson is dead, buy his shit" self-serving promo mere minutes after his death is announced.

Yahoo! throws up this winner of a headline: "MICHAEL JACKSON DIES: Yahoo! News reported on scene outside hospital on Twitter."

Far, far more people are upset about MJ's death than the deaths of citizens in Iran fighting for their own freedoms.

So it's time to post this then:

21st-Jun-2009 01:44 pm - Happy Daddy Day!
Happy Father's day to all you dad's out there, be it new or old.

To those who aren't dads but have one of their own (i.e. the non-clones), don't forget to call yer dad (What you call him I'll leave up to you).
20th-Jun-2009 11:13 am - Holy Crap that's hot!
Ok, so today's high is going to be a wankingly hot 96+ degrees.

I'm gonna shut down my PC for most of the day in order to 1) not generate even more waste heat for our A/C to pump out, and 2) maybe not sit around distracted instead of doing things.

Just in case anyone worries about my sudden and drastic drop in posting frequency, :)

Did I mention I recently got a chainsaw?
18th-Jun-2009 09:17 pm - USPS and Augmented Reality
Holy Shit!

Not only is it legitimately augmented reality, it's also legitimately useful!

Check out how to view Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes in Augmented Reality. You need a webcam and a web browser that supports flash. If you don't have a webcam you can still watch the video of how it works.
13th-Jun-2009 07:32 pm - LEGO!

7th-Jun-2009 09:18 pm - I just realized something...
So with the whole Susan Boyle story, I just today realized what it reminded me about.

It reminded me of a Theodore Sturgeon story. Not a specific story, mind you. But the story of Susan Boyle and her sudden and amazing rise to fame, her appearance, being impaired at birth, the whole "outcast/freak" aura... That's pure Sturgeon. He's written dozens of stories about relationships between people who were real, in ways few others have been able to express.

Theodore Sturgeon is probably my favorite author of all time, as he had the talent to really describe the human condition without being haughty, overbearing or lowbrow. So past the cut below, I've included the entirety of one of his short stories called "A Saucer of Loneliness". It's well worth reading, in my opinion, even if you are not at all into Science Fiction. It's more what I'd like to think of as Human Fiction.

6th-Jun-2009 03:49 pm - Ooooh, shiney!
Palm Pre is now available from Sprint. Yay!

Now I have to decide if I actually want to upgrade. All the reviews have been pretty positive and the price is pretty darn cheap. But I'd have to buy the PalmOS emulator if I wanted to run any of the PalmOS software I have. I'm especially fond of using Pocket Quicken, and I'm not sure how well that'd work with the emulator or if Landmark will make a Pre version.

As much as I hate to do it, I think I need to wait a bit and see what offerings emerge.
1st-Jun-2009 04:44 pm - I'm going to kill you, Perl
You are so dead, Perl!

1st-Jun-2009 09:18 am - $20 well spent
Took Silly to the Got to Be NC Festival this Sunday and spent $20 for an all-you-can-ride wristband.

She then proceeded to ride for about 3 hours straight. Mostly going down slides and riding on swings. Just like at a playground.

Only bigger, :)
Quoting recent e-mail from my mom:

I had a secunia message to upgrade acrobate, I did the download, got the newer version, but still got the secunia security warning; I found out that the acrobat installer was not going thru; I managed to get that done via the windows damned firewall permission, but has read only. This is all in the permissions and user I think. It has to do with inherited or not; I took off the inherited and that helped in some area, but not full control.

28th-Apr-2009 11:05 pm - Yes Lord?
